More Commissaires required.
28th September, 2011
I received an email from Janette Hazlett, SC's national Events Officer, explaining that SC's Commissaires' Commission is trying to assess the need for commissaire training over the winter period.
I have been asked to fill in a questionnaire which asks for an assessment of the number of new commissaires required in your area. It also asks for an assessment of the number of people who would be interested in becoming a commissaire. It may be necessary to travel to a course as they will be run in locations accessible to the largest number of potential candidates.
Please can I ask your help? I have to return the questionnaire by 14 Oct but I would like to send it off earlier as I will be away 7-14 Oct.
I know this season clubs have experienced difficulties finding commissaires for events. We need a larger pool of commissaires in the north so commissaires don't end up officiating at their own club events. We also have in our area several commissaires who ride events - so again we need a larger pool to allow these commissaires to choose to ride some events and commissaire others.
Please can you speak to your club members and encourage them to think about becoming a commissaire. I can provide details about the training required.
Janette adds that for Cross Country, Downhill and Cyclo Cross the return is best coming from the relevant discipline association to cover the national situation. However I would be pleased to hear from MTB clubs any comments regarding commissaires in the North.
I think the above is also relevant to the issue of timekeepers for events - a larger pool of qualified timekeepers would make life easier for event organisers.
best wishes

Some important dates....
16th September, 2011
The North of Scotland Cycling Association AGM will take place at 2pm on Sunday 6th November in Culloden Academy. All are welcome. Club secretaries please let me have any items you wish put on the agenda.
Our annual presentation of awards this year will also take place in November. The date for the NOSCARS is Saturday 19th November at the Station Hotel, Avoch. Again everyone is welcome and we hope for a good turnout. The presentation of awards will be at 2pm but its hoped that most folk will come along earlier, enjoy a bar lunch and a chance to chat. The Station Hotel has been refurbished and recently reopened - I've been to check out the bar meals - excellent!

- Sports should provide a safe and fun environment for children and young people. Every week hundreds of thousands of youngsters happily and safely participate in the care of dedicated sports coaches. To ensure that good work continues in a safe environment, organisers, coaches and parents must be aware of child protection issues.
- Protect yourself, the young people you are coaching and your employer by understanding and following good coaching practice. Learn about child abuse and how to handle situations if you have concerns.
- Organised by the Moray Council Sports Development.

Forres riders have a good spell.
8th August, 2011
Last weekend saw the Scottish 100 mile time trial championship held at Alness and hosted by the north of Scotland cycling association. The event was won by Steve Nuttley of the Sandy Wallace Cycles in 3 hours 53 mins 33 seconds. The only Forres rider was Doug Cowie who covered the distance in 5 hrs 23 mins and 30 seconds.
Elgin Cycling Club held a 10 mile time trial on Thursday 28 July. Weather conditions were fine but accompanied by the usual breeze off the coast. The overall result was very tight with the winner being Wim Chalmet of East Sutherland Wheelers in 22-07. Forres rider Jim McLoughlin was a mere second behind in 22-08 and it looks like McLoughlin seems destined to hang onto the eternal bridesmaid title as yet another strong performance leaves him on the podium once again. Hopefully McLoughlin will make the move up to the top step of the podium before he leaves the area later this summer. Other Forres riders included Dave Harter 22-59, Callum Finlayson's strong ride of 23-38 was another personal best, Billy Gunn 24-10 Peter H Robertson 25-13, George Grant, who also recorded a personal best in 25-44, Mike Reaper 25-55, strong rides form Neil Lamond -Lawson 27-47 and Laura Gunn 28-47, Walter Baird 31-35 and Murray Grant in 34-23.
.
The Black Isle Grand Prix was promoted by Ross-sire Roads Cycling Club over a very hilly course which made for an incredibly tough race. This time McLoughlin was in touch but just missed out to claim another third place behind winner Peter Alexander of the City of Inverness club who recorded a 1-32- 07, Gavin Shirley Nevis Cycles was second with a time of 1-32-12, McLoughlin recorded a 1-32-28 to take the final podium spot. Other Forres riders included Dave Harter whose ride of 1-37-59 was good enough to take 8th place and Peter H Robertson 2-12-25.
Meanwhile the club's popular Summer League series heads towards it's conclusion for this year with just two Tuesdays left to go.

London 2012 - Young Games Maker Volunteer Program
29th July, 2011
LOCOG has been progressing the London 2012 Games Maker programme for volunteers for the Games. They are now about to move forward with the one remaining aspect of the programme – volunteer roles for 16-18 year olds, to be known as Young Games Makers (YGMs). Over 2,000 young people from across the UK will be recruited to take up volunteer roles vital to ensuring the successful delivery of the Games. Approximately 250 teams of young people, who must be aged 16 or over on 1 July 2012 and under 18 on 1 January 2012 will join the adult Games Makers next summer to help stage the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. LOCOG are inviting organisations such as youth or sports clubs, community and volunteering groups and schools and colleges that are members of the London 2012 Get Set network, to spend the next eight weeks reviewing the roles on offer and encouraging their young people to consider forming a team.
Key dates and details for the Young Games Maker application process are:
- 25 July 2011 onwards: Specialist recruitment begins direct through the relevant National Governing Bodies and other appropriate sporting bodies.
Those interested in the roles available through generalist recruitment will be able to review the roles, the skills required and find out more about the team application process at www.london2012.com/young-games-maker
- 22 September 2011 – 31 October 2011: Generalist applications received via the LOCOG website from team leaders from all recognised organisations such as volunteer organisations, sports clubs, community groups and schools and colleges that are members of London 2012’s Get Set network for the more numerous roles. Applications for Olympic Tennis Ball Boys and Girls and Wheelchair Tennis specialist roles also commence from 22 September.
I would be grateful if you could cascade this opportunity through your networks and encourage people in your communities/area, to get involved.
Many Thanks

Youth Coaching
15th July, 2011
Here is a good opportunity for some structured coaching during the summer break for all of the youngsters from Laura Nicolson, a coach who many of you have already met at the Tuesday League. The coaching will take place in the school playground of Anderson's Primary School on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday evening. The earliest date could be 20 June, the venue must be booked, but it all depends on a commitment from the young riders.
Would all of you who are interested in participating please let me know, as soon as possible, with your preferred days, and I will contact Laura and Paul (Paul will book the venue) to start the ball rolling.
This is a great opportunity to learn vital new skills and should be fun for all concerned. Please remember that Laura will be coming all the way from Inverness for the sessions, so if you say you are attending, please don't let her down.
Flying fifty for Forres riders
20th June, 2011
Forres Cycling Club riders took the team prize at the North of Scotland Cycling Association's 50 mile Time trial this weekend. The race was held on the Invergordon course on Sunday.
The overall winner was Gavin Shirley of Nevis Cycles in a time of 1 hour 51 mins 44 seconds. Forres rider Jim McLoughlin finally broke his recent run of third places to step up to a second place with a personal best time of 1 hour 54 mins and 22 seconds. This was McLoughlin's second personal best in a week after his recent 25 mile PB and demonstrating that he is in top form.
Third place went to Roger Sewell of Ross-shire Roads team in a time of 2 hours 7 mins and 22 secs.
The other Forres riders were also in great form with triathlon specialist Neil Carpenter recording a personal best for the 50 miles in 2 hours 15 mins and 8 secs - which was also fast enough to give him a top 10 place. Another multi discipline rider was duathlete Doug Cowie who recorded a 2 hours 24 min 18 secs another PB. With three strong rides and all three recording lifetime bests it was little surprise that Forres took the team prize
